Thank you for your interest in Early Entrance Evaluation for your child. Please read all of the information below before completing this form. The deadline to apply is May 1.
Eligibility
Your child must live in the district, and their birthday must fall between September 2 and October 15.
- Children who turn five by October 15 can be considered for kindergarten.
- Children who turn six by October 15 can be considered for first grade.
Children must meet all of the following criteria set by the school board.
- A high level of academic skills in reading, writing and math
- Intellectual ability in the Very Superior range (IQ score of at least 130)
- Advanced social and emotional maturity
- A high degree of persistence
Evaluation Process
Evaluations are conducted mid-May - early June. Final decisions are made by the end of June.
Stage 1:
- Your child will meet with two Wayzata Public Schools teachers to assess their reading, writing and math skills. Children must be performing one or more grade levels above their peers in all three areas.
- During the meeting, the teachers will be observing your child for advanced social and emotional skills. This ensures that they can be successful in a class with older students.
- If your child meets the academic and social and emotional criteria, they will be recommended to move on to Stage 2.
Stage 2:
- Your child will meet with a district school psychologist to complete an IQ test.
- The psychologist will ask you to complete a social/emotional/behavior rating scale to supplement the observations made by the teachers. They will also reach out to your child’s previous teachers (if available) to complete a rating scale.
- After all the information is collected, the Early Entrance Evaluation team will meet and make the final decision about early entrance.
